It is now enshrined in AView dogma that every May we get down in front of the telly with half a dozen bottles of beer, and pass judgement on the Eurovision Song Contest. Since 1998, Evan Paris has led a dissident nation of drunken journalists armed only with 58 points and a communal biro. Their mission is to vote for the ten best tracks. There is no point whatsoever in this, as by the time their votes are presented to the world, the winning song has already been selected. The aim is perhaps to try and educate the people of Europe for the next time around, but then the people of Europe have probably forgotten all the songs by the time these votes are up. No. In short these are merely drunken ramblings, recorded for no clear reason. Documented on the right, for your pleasure and for posterity (although what use they are to anyone is questionable) are AView's annual Eurovision reports from 1998 (when we first started) through to the present day. Below are the scores given by the AView jury, alongside the actual result of each contest. Here, the final totalised scores are shown in brackets with a Eurovision style rating attributed to the rankings. In the final two columns, these positional points are totted up to show something or other. As you will see, we think Estonia and Malta are highly overrated by the European vote. We also feel that Austria, Holland and Slovenia have been treated unfairly. But there can be no disputing the fact that Sweden are clearly the best. Keen-eyed Eurovisionophiles will notice that we haven't bothered to take into account Croatia's 33% points deduction in the 1999 contest for using "synthesised male backing vocals", because in the end they were still allowed to keep their fourth place. For the record, their official points tally ended up as 79, which ought really to have put them 7th. Cheating bastards... Oh well. Here it is: |
