Actually, the continuity announcer's interference was scripted and entirely deliberate. As is the fortnight's wait. Cheeky, eh?

Usual Leon stuff:
The crypt scene was done in March 2004.
The bedsit bits are from the same shoot as the stuff with Jim, mid 2004.
The pub bit was partly done around July. They originally shot it in 2002, with Landau, and the Buscemi bits are from that shoot. Steve Buscemi originally had a larger role, but it was dropped because he couldn't return to film more after Landau left.
The scene with Dudgeon was done in early 2004.
The Letitia stuff was done around April, I think. I think the Sven stuff is a rather strained reference to Breakfast at Tiffanys. There's a character in that who vaguely resembles Sven in appearence and manner.
The Attercliffe Cemetery stuff was done at the same time as the Adelphi shoot. It was all done during April and May.
The final scenes at the sewage works were recorded in May, largely on location. The cooling tower they are in is actually at a power station near Gainsborough in Lincolnshire (the Tinsley cooling towers don't work and so would've been less spectacular). Naturally, most of the viaduct stuff is comp-gen. This is one of the biggest-budget scenes in the series (indeed in the whole history of ANS).

I like that Alan called it the "Adelphi Gheatre". Just like the Mouseman website. Nice touch. I feel rewarded for my sadness now.

Isn't it a bit of a cheat going to a working cooling tower?
I suppose it's one of the foibles of Hell... Just because the real ones don't work doesn't mean that Hell's shouldn't...

Hi, Quiz. Long time no see and all that :)

I've not seen any eggs. I've been looking, but I've not spotted any likely candidates. Maybe SJ has abandoned them.

So what do we think was in the box? I can't help but notice that Darth Pat made a fairly good prediction there:
"I think maybe that the exploding pub and the Pulp Fiction quote are connected, because the exploding pub reminded me of the end of that film noir thing with the glowing box. I forget what it's called, but the box in Pulp Fiction was based on the box in this, I seem to remember. Possibly this is a reference to the box that Eugene bought. Possibly Eugene bought some sort of magical Box of Delights thing."
Nice going, DarthPat.

Well I didn't like to blow my own trumpet... The film noir with the glowing box was "Kiss Me Deadly", by the way.

What's been released though? That's what I want to know. What was in the box?
Also, Hogben says that Mayburn's box was a theatre box. So if he's telling the truth, I got it wrong. This is a different box. Still fits my prediction though, just not perfectly.

To return to my analysis of Ep3, I asked whether the mention of Lauren on the Mouseman website had anything to do with Bhuvana. But presumably it referred to Lauren Harries. So I'll strike through that one.

We had another Twin Peaks backwards-talking reference in Ep4. This overkill leads me to think that there's something more significant than just a slight reference. But I don't really see what.

Watching Ep3 again... is that Lauren Laverne doing the OU lecture on the telly in the betting shop? Looks like it might be. Is there any significance to that, or to her appearance in the crypt thing at the start of Ep4? It sounds like her on the radio too, after Babysham's night with Letitia. I'd've loved to have heard her finish that sentence: "you're listening to the voice of...". I'm beginning to suspect that Bhuvana has more significance than she at first appeared to. It makes me wonder if there was any significance to her falling down the stairs and being caught by Jim...

And I wonder what significance, if any, Mel Sterland had to things?

Edit:
Oh, and this vampire stuff we keep getting everytime BS sleeps with Letitia... I mean, she's not a vampire because she's been out in the daylight, but she's doing something to him, presumably. Makes you wonder if she's not played with his programming again, and made him open the box perhaps?

It's been a long wait, but we finally get to see Ep5...

Whatever was in the box can't be too destructive, surely. Unless Sheffield is going to be a wasteland today. Though I suppose that's possible. It'd explain the comparative lack of shooting we've seen.

Well there's the Easter Eggs, at any rate...!
Do you reckon we'll see Alex before the end of the series? I think _I_ do.

DarthPat, had you seen that already or are you just rather brilliant?

Just rather brilliant, I suppose. You mean the Bhuvana prediction, I take it? Well I think it was a safe guess given her increasing presence and her name. And it's not like any of my other comments bore fruit this week. :P

Well done yourself, Hutch, anyway... You predicted rightly about the level of destruction. :)

Was it just me or were the feet back in abundance? What is it with feet? Is SJ just a foot fetishist, or is there more? I keep thinking back to those dominoes...

More Bullseye references too... Hmm.

So what effect does this episode have on our understanding of the ANS theology?

STEW: "There's a lot of deities and demons about the place, all pretty ordinary characters."

Satan is presumably one such creature. Others include Stew, God, Lucy, Jeremy, and perhaps Tosh.

Stew can smell angels, and he doesn't like them. All the angels we have seen would appear to be working for Bhuvana.

Bhuvana created God who created the Earth (and its contents, presumably). And Bhuvana gave humans "knowledge" and so on... It's all very gnostic, isn't it. And then Bhuvana "fathers" Stew, and God removes Bhuvana's powers, and now those powers are back, presumably.

So Stew failed to enact a coup or something on behalf of Bhuvana, because no-one told him to (can't blame him). And then God somehow pursuaded Stew that he was his father. Now we're into Star Wars territory. I suppose if you have super-powers, you're going to naturally consider the possibility that God is a blood relative. So where does Sally fit into that picture? It isn't clear.

Now Bhuvana has her powers back, she is going to have another go at a coup. Presumably Satan is going to help her. Where are all these demigods like Satan from, then? Are they all halfbreeds like Stew or, say, Hercules?

And why do we have to wait another fortnight for Episode 6?

Contrary to ANS tradition, the opening scenes are the exact same takes as Ep1, replayed as per the episode title. The episode title is the only difference between the start of Ep1 and the start of Ep5.

The remainder of the opening scene (including the Usual Suspects bit) was filmed in late 2002. They filmed a number of scripts because they were unsure as to who'd be willing to take part in the Black Mass. There were a number of replacement names for Hogben and Wonnacott, including celebrity interior designers, although the antiques experts were the favoured option what with the Mouseman's guild etc. Nigh-on every expert in the book was name-checked. I believe Hogben was the first choice. Not sure if Wonnacott was though.

As most of you are aware, the meditation scene on the roof was part of the first shooting back in 2002. Tomy in prison was also filmed back in 2002.

The Bullseye-style ad bumpers were new to me when the episode aired, so they must've been made recently. The adverts themselves were put together over the course of this last month, and were the last things to be filmed. Each one was farmed out to a different production company.

The stuff in Letitia's flat was filmed in March 2004. The stuff in Stew and Leon's bookshop was filmed in late August. Stew's scenes were some of the last to be filmed, because of other comitments Ewan had (not least his global bike trip). His scenes in Letita's flat, however, were done in March.

The "Flashback Sequence" was done in early 2004. The Krapp's Last Tape thing was done in late 2002.

The closing scene was filmed this summer.

4Square:
The reasons you have to wait a fortnight are:
a) There were originally going to be seven episodes, but now there are only going to be six.
b) The final episode is still in post-production.
c) The date the final episode is aired has moderate significance.

By the way, if you're taping the episodes, I recommend you get a multi-stream recorder, if you haven't already.

Thanks for the heads up on the taping issue, Leon.
Could I just tape the first showing and the repeat and get satisfactory results, or is it going to be more complicated than that?

That's a fair point, Paté. I think you'll be fine with that strategy so long as you supervise the recording, and push your tuner through the appropriate hoops. I think it's only the two video streams involved.

I just saw the finished version of the final episode. They cut it fine, finishing it. But it's now all done and ready for broadcast. Thought I'd share the good news. God knows we need some. It's dedicated to John Peel, naturally.
