Topic: Is A New Soap Tull-Inspired?  - 200312071208
I was reading some notes about the Jethro Tull album "A Passion Play" the other day, and I noticed that there were certain similarities between that and A New Soap.

For one there's the similarity of the title. But here's what else I picked up, in chronological order:

A Passion Play begins with Ronnie Pilgrim's funeral.
A New Soap essentially begins with Barnie's death and her body being taken away.

APP continues with Ronnie finding himself in a sandy limbo.
ANS sees Jim in a desert and the rest in a limbo set.

Ronnie watches his life on film.
The cast watch Sunset Beach and become part of the programme.

Ronnie ends up in Heaven but he doesn't like it.
Our heroes end up in Heaven but don't like it.

Ronnie wangles a place in Hell but doesn't like it.
Our heroes wangle a place in Hell. Alan doesn't like it.

Ronnie escapes to the land of the living.
Alan effects an escape to the land of the living.

APP ends with the words "Steve! Caroline!"
Steve Jesper wrote ANS. Caroline is a major character in ANS.

Both call Lucifer Lucy.

What do you think?

I think it's just the coincidence of two stories concerning a trip through Limbo, Heaven and Hell. I expect you could make similar connections with something like Danté or the Qur'an or something. And the Steve and Caroline thing is especcially tenuous, don't you think? If Stew were called Steve, there might be more in it.

I agree with MrsMcGregor, but if SJ catches a glimpse of this you can expect Babysham to be loaded with Tullian references just to spite us.

Fair enough. I just thought I'd share it with you.

Do you think that ANS might rip off Star Wars slightly? Just an inkling I had... I'm probably hopelessly misguided.

There used to be a list of references on the scene index, but I think it was dropped on the revamp.

Hey, have you seen "Topic:Karen"? Apparently "Steve! Caroline!" features as a secret message hidden at the end of Episode 5.
That's got to lend weight to my theory, don't you think?

Not really.

I mean, I'm sure it's a Tull reference, but I still question that ANS as a whole is "Tull-inspired".
I think the number of Star Wars references, for instance, far outweigh the number of Tull references.

4Square's right. I think Tull are pretty low down in the references league table. Gong are higher than Tull, for a start. Tull might just about be level with Pink Floyd, perhaps.
